About the trail

Starting from the Huia Street entrance, it begins with a steep, grassy climb, setting the tone for what’s to come. The track then transitions into dense native bush where Kohekohe trees tower overhead. Following the orange trail markers, you will face uneven terrain, with fallen trees and protruding roots to navigate.

The track steadily climbs to its highest point at 521 metres, where you’ll be rewarded with expansive views out to Kapiti Island the sweeping coastline.

Continuing along the ridge, the track then dips back into the forest and passes two lookout points, each providing unique perspectives of the landscape - one overlooking the rolling terrain of Reikorangi Valley, and the other offering views over Waikanae and the coastline.

At this point the route merges with the popular Parata Track for the scenic bush descent, leading back down to the Tui Crescent entrance.

Getting there and know before you go

  • The main entrance to Hemi Matenga Scenic Reserve is at Tui Crescent. There is an on-road parking area by the track up to a reservoir. You can also start the Te Au track from Huia Street (easier on the knees, as it is a steep and grassy climb up to the highest point).
  • Plan your route before you leave, and let someone know where you’re going.
  • Get ready using Plan My Walk for track alerts, weather forecasts, trip reviews and a packing list.
  • Take warm waterproof clothing, durable footwear, sunscreen, food, and water.
  • Toilets and water are not available.
  • Get an up-to-date weather report from MetService before setting off.
  • Mobile coverage is patchy in the bush areas.
  • Keep an eye out for orange track markers as there are some side-tracks.
  • Dogs must be on a leash at all times.
