About the trail

Te Ara o Tipapa (Wetland Loop) is an easy trail near the US Marines Memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park, offering a rich mix of landscapes and a glimpse into the area’s ecological and cultural heritage.

Wander through restored wetlands, cross gently rolling sand dunes, and explore the last remaining remnant of original kahikatea forest on the Kāpiti Coast. The track also leads you through the “Marines” wetland - first planted in 2003 - and past a memorial commemorating the US Marine camps that once occupied this area during World War II.

This peaceful trail is a haven for native birdlife. Keep an eye (and ear) out for tui, piwakawaka, and dabchicks - often seen ferrying the ducklings on their backs.

The loop is mostly suited to walking as it is mainly unsealed tracks or grassy areas. There are a few small hills which are suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs.
