About the trail
In total it is approximately 5.55 km (3.3 km uphill via the Link Track and 2.25 km downhill on the Red Tape Track). It's an intermediate track, suitable for riders with some experience. Families with older kids (8+ with biking skills) may also enjoy it.
The trail has a mix of gravel and earth, with flowing downhill sections, bumps, and creek crossings. Expect stunning views of the valley, Kāpiti Island, and the coastline, with opportunities to spot native birds and late-summer wildflowers like dahlias.

Getting there and know before you go
- Start at the Whareroa Farm car park, accessible via the Mackays Crossing exit off State Highway 1.
- Follow the well-signposted Link Track uphill to the Five Ways lookout. From there, continue 200m along Campbell’s Mill Road to find the Red Tape Track heading downhill.
- A mountain bike is necessary; road tyres won’t handle the terrain well.
- The track can become slippery when wet, so ride with caution in damp conditions.
- Dogs are not allowed due to farming activities in the area.
