Follow the banks of the Ōtaki River on this popular walking and cycling trail.

Starting from the river mouth, the gravel track winds past State Highway 1, taking you through regenerating native bush and peaceful open spaces, With its gentle terrain, the trail is suitable for all fitness levels and ideal for a family-friendly adventure.

Getting there and know before you go

  • The trail starts from the southern end of Ōtaki Beach. It can also be accessed from Kāpiti Lane (just past the Ōtaki River Estuary Viewing Platform).
  • Shared trail, watch out for other users on bikes or horseback.
  • Dogs are permitted on this trail.
  • Horses are allowed on the Ōtaki River Trail, with the exception of private land upstream of Chystalls Lagoon on the northern side of the river, and Iwi land (Ngāti Huia ki Katihiku) on the southern river bank.
