Ōtaki Kite Festival Look to the skies
New Zealand’s largest kite festival returns to the Kāpiti Coast this summer and makes for a fun day out for all the family.
The Details
Look to the skies and marvel at world-class kites of all shapes and sizes during the two-day Ōtaki Kite Festival at Ōtaki Beach.
More than 25,000 people are expected to flock to the free iconic Kapiti event. In its 11th year, the skies will be full of colourful kites in the form of everything from huge inflatable whales and dragons to artistic kites.
The New Zealand Kite Flyers Association and Peter Lynn Kites will be on site flying their huge inflatable kites.
There will also be international guests flying - Robert Brassington from Australia, and Germany’s Petra and Torsten Schulz and Karin Gurezka and Fritz Kiewit.
If you want to join in the fun either bring a kite to fly or buy one from a stall on the day. Flying will be weather dependent.
Kites aside, enjoy live entertainment on the day. Relax with a picnic, buy food from one of the many food vendors and check out the goods on offer from the stalls on site.
For the kids there will be slides, bouncy castles and the kite train. Best of all, the free big dig is back. Always a huge drawcard, the big dig will be held at 11am both days with prizes from bikes and iceblocks to be won.
